Is it just me, or is anyone else literally feeling a shift in their energy since the beginning of fall?
I mean, to me it feels like there’s not just a change in the weather.
As the leaves start to change and the air turns crisp, I also feel like this is the perfect time to slow down and focus on yourself.
And self-care during this season isn’t just about cozy sweaters and pumpkin spice lattes (although, yes, those are great too!).
It’s about nurturing ALL parts of yourself—your mind, your body, and your emotions—so you can transition smoothly into the cooler months feeling balanced, energized, and ready to thrive.
But, how do you adjust your self-care to match the season?
Let me give you my best fall self care tips, to make sure your mind, body, and emotions are in tune with the changing season.
Why Holistic Self Care is Key in Fall
With the arrival of fall, everything slows down—nature, daylight, and often, our energy levels.
But that doesn’t mean we should forget about taking care of ourselves.
In fact, fall is one of the most important times to focus on holistic self-care.
The cooler weather, shorter days, and approaching holiday season can sometimes lead to stress, lower mood, or even burnout.
This is why it’s essential to focus on all areas of self-care during the fall—mental, physical, and emotional.
When you take care of yourself from the inside out, you’re able to embrace the season fully, without letting seasonal changes throw you off balance.
Because fall isn’t just a time of change for nature—it’s a time of change for you too.
So, let’s explore how you can take adjust to fall with these hollistic self-care tips.
Physical Self Care: Caring for Your Body Through the Seasonal Transition
The shift from hot summer days to cooler fall temperatures means your body is adjusting too.
To keep yourself feeling physically well, you need to adapt your self-care routine accordingly.
Here’s how to nurture your body this fall:
- Boost your immunity. Fall is cold and flu season, so make sure you’re fueling your body with nutrient-rich foods like seasonal veggies (hello, pumpkin!), whole grains, and lean proteins. Consider taking a vitamin D supplement to combat the lack of sunlight. I’ve been drinking tea with added vitamins too, and I can highly recommend them!
- Hydrate and switch up your skincare. Even though it’s cooler, staying hydrated is just as important. Drink water, herbal teas, and eat hydrating foods like fruits and vegetables. For your skin, swap out lightweight summer products for richer moisturizers and add exfoliating treatments to keep dryness at bay.
- Move your body regularly. I mean, I totally get it: it’s tempting to stay cozy indoors. But physical movement is key. Enjoy fall walks in nature, and take in the beautiful scenery that the fall brings with it. And if the rain is pouring, you can always keep it cozy with at-home workouts like yoga or Pilates. Keeping your body active will help fight sluggishness and keep your energy levels stable.
Listening to your body’s needs during this seasonal transition will help you stay energized and healthy throughout the fall.
These fall self care tips will help you feel more energized and prepared to embrace the colder months to come.
Mental Self Care: Beating the Seasonal Blues
Fall can sometimes bring on feelings of fatigue or sadness, especially with the shorter days and less sunlight.
This is where mental self-care becomes so important.
To keep your mind sharp and your mood lifted, try these simple strategies:
- Practice mindfulness and gratitude. Start each day by writing down three things you’re grateful for or spend a few minutes meditating to center yourself before your day begins.
- Get natural light when you can. Even though the days are shorter, make it a priority to spend some time outside or by a window to soak up sunlight. And even though it’s getting cooler, try to get outside as much as you can. Natural light and fresh air help regulate your mood and fight the seasonal blues, while also boosting your energy levels. And fall is exactly when we need a little bit of extra energy!
- Limit screen time in the evening. As the evenings grow longer, it’s easy to to get sucked into mindlessly scrolling on your phone for hours. My biggest tip is to set a screen time limit in the evenings, and replace that time by settling on the couch with a good book, journaling about your day, or any activity that helps you unwind (that does not involve a screen).
By making small changes to support your mental health this fall with these self care tips, you can protect yourself from the seasonal slump and keep your mind refreshed.
Emotional Self Care: Embracing Fall’s Call for Reflection
Fall naturally invites introspection.
With the changing leaves and the quieting energy of the season, it’s a great time to slow down, look inward, and process your emotions.
Emotional self-care in fall can help you connect with yourself on a deeper level and find peace in the season.
Here’s how:
- Journal your thoughts. Fall is a time of change, and journaling can help you process your emotions and find clarity. Whether it’s reflecting on what this year has brought you so far or just processing how you’re feeling as the seasons change, writing down your emotions can be incredibly therapeutic.
- Allow yourself to feel. Fall can stir up all sorts of emotions—nostalgia, anticipation, or even sadness. Allow yourself to feel what comes up without judgment. You don’t always need to “fix” how you feel. Just let it be there, try and see how it feels to live through it instead of ignoring or pushing it away.
- Set healthy boundaries. As the holiday season approaches, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with social commitments. Protect your emotional health by saying no when you need to and carving out time for yourself.
Emotional self-care during fall is all about giving yourself grace and allowing time for reflection and personal growth.
It’s the perfect time to reconnect with your emotions and give yourself some time to reflect and readjust, get clear on your own goals and realign with your values.
